Avian Influenza


Canine Influenza

The first case of canine influenza in Iowa has been confirmed in Sioux City by the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Lab from the nasal swabs of a sick dog exhibiting flu-like symptoms.  The specific strain (whether it is H3N8 or the newer strain H3N2) is not known yet.   


The ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory can test samples for Canine Influenza Virus both the old strain (H3N8) or new strain (H3N2). The ISU VDL companion animal submission form is linked here:

 Nasal swabs from the affected animal shipped to the VDL on ice are the preferred sample type for testing.

Apply to Become the IVMA Emerging Leader Liaison

Applications are now being taken to serve as the IVMA’s Emerging Leader Liaison to the Administrative Committee (ELL). This is an opportunity for an IVMA member to further develop their leadership skills by being involved with the IVMA at the administrative level. The ELL will build relationships with other IVMA leaders and give back to the veterinary profession.


The purpose of this one year position is to provide a link and build relationships between recent veterinarian school graduates and the IVMA.  This position is open to any IVMA member that has graduated from veterinary school within the last 7 years.

Canine Dysautonomia Case Confirmed in Iowa

The first known case of canine dysautonomia (CD) has been diagnosed in Iowa.  Canine dysautonomia is a sporadic, generally fatal disease of dogs. It is due to degeneration of nerve cells controlling subconscious bodily functions, including control of normal swallowing and motility of the digestive tract, heart function, control of urination, and pupils of the eye.  Click here to read more.
